History of christianity in myanmar

Christianity was introduced to Myanmar in the 16th century by Portuguese missionaries, but it remained limited in scope until the 19th century. The faith began to spread more widely during the British colonial period, especially through the efforts of Protestant missionaries like Adoniram Judson, an American Baptist who arrived in 1813. Judson translated the Bible into Burmese and laid the groundwork for what would become the Myanmar Baptist Convention.

As missionary efforts expanded, Christianity took strong root among ethnic minority groups such as the Chin, Kachin, and Karen. For many of these communities, the Christian faith became intertwined with cultural identity and resilience, especially in the face of political and ethnic conflicts.

Despite being a minority religion—comprising about 6–8% of the population—Christianity has played a significant role in education, healthcare, and social services. Churches have often stood as centers of hope and leadership, particularly in rural and conflict-affected areas. Over the years, Christian communities have faced various challenges, including government restrictions and occasional persecution, yet they continue to persevere and grow.

Today, Christianity in Myanmar is diverse, with Baptists, Catholics, Anglicans, and Pentecostals among the most prominent groups. Christian organizations remain active in promoting peace, development, and interfaith cooperation across the country.
